Canon’s New PRO-1100 17-inch Class Home Printer Promises Gallery-Quality Work

Canon has just announced the introduction of a new 17-inch printer that promises professional-grade, gallery-quality prints for home printing.

This new model is called the A2 imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 and if that sounds like a mouthful, at least Canon promises a key feature for this model: that it lets you print out your best images with professional quality, right from home.

That particular promise is something that many photographers would certainly love to see fulfilled affordably for their own artistic and project work, and in the case of this new release, it might just meet expectations.

The predecessor of the PRO-1100 is the PRO-1000. Despite its 2015 release date, it continues to be a genuinely well-rated pro photo printer by many users and numerous product review sites.

If the new PRO-1100 is even marginally better or more equipped with features, it should be an extremely useful investment for any serious photographer. Importantly, this new release only costs $100 more than its highly popular predecessor.

With the PRO-1100, Canon claims that its new 12 Lucia Pro II pigment inks make a large difference, letting this printer deliver professional-grade, gallery-quality prints despite being well within the budget of a home or small studio user.

The PRO-1100’s entirely new inks have also been improved and Canon specifically claims that these promise deeper black levels, richer dark blue tones, and generally smoother color gradation.

Another feature of the Lucia Pro II inks in this edition is Canon’s Chroma Optimizer, which works to ensure smooth reflectivity and other display qualities in prints.

Again, given the history and widely positive reception of the older PRO-1000, Canon only needs to not fail at modest improvements to have a winner with this model.

With that in mind, I’d bet that it will deliver enough quality, color accuracy and richness to be worth its price.

Another characteristic of the PRO-1100’s pigment inks is their durability.

According to Canon, prints made with the PRO-1100 and its Lucia Pro II pigment inks can last up to 200 years. This is a major improvement from the 60 years of high visual quality promised for prints from the PRO-1000.

Canon also claims that the output from this printer is designed to resist abrasion and scratching. This is because of its PFI-4100 ink set vs. the PFI-1000 ink of the PRO-1000.

The output versatility of Canon’s new printer is another thing worth mentioning. This model is flexible with a broad range of media including roll prints, prints almost 3.3 meters or 11 feet long and of course, borderless prints of up to 17 x 25 inches.

Also, unlike the older Pro-1000, the PRO-1100 can handle prints with diverse dimensions, including those of papers sized 7 x 10, 9 x 13, 12 x 12, or 13 x 19 inches.

Finally, it also supports many types of paper and material, including especially heavy fine art paper or just about anything flexible enough with a thickness no greater than 0.7 millimeters.

The Canon PRO-1100 is, despite all of its versatile capability also a fairly compact printer, making it practical for home office or studio use.

Its dimensions are just 72.3 x 43.5 x 28.5 centimeters or 28.5 x 17.1 x 11.2 inches and it weighs only modestly more than the 32.3kg or 71.2 lbs of its predecessor.

Connectivity-wise, the Canon PRO-1100 includes WiFi, Ethernet and USB connectivity. It also has a 3-inch LCD control screen.

Canon has opened the imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 for preorder at a price of just $1,299.99. Again, this is only $100 more than the current price of its predecessor.
