Tamron Releases Lens Firmware For “Significantly” Better AF Performance

Tamron has announced a new and free-to-download firmware update that is supposed to deliver major improvements to AF tracking in key lenses.

According to the company, its new firmware will “significantly” boost the autofocus tracking of Sony E-mount versions of its 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Di III RXD and 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD lenses.

Tamron’s own press release for the firmware update specifically states that these particular lenses, for which the firmware is being released, should “keep excellent track of moving objects” once its installed.

Moreover, the lens maker adds,

“With this new firmware update, the AF tracking performance has significantly improved, and will now keep good track of a moving object. Also, AF Assist function during video recording is now supported.”

The update also delivers compatibility with AF assist during video recording. This allows you to manually focus your lens even if AF is running.

For videographers, this particular function from the firmware is useful because it lets them use their Sony camera to quickly grab AF of a subject but also change the focus manually as needed for shooting onto other subjects in the frame.

If you own either of these two Tamron lenses for Sony E-mount cameras, you can get your hands on the firmware download through Tamron’s website on this page.

The two lenses in question are both telephoto zoom models that Tamron has released for Sony E mounts. The 70-300 F4.5-6.3 Di RXD III is also available for Nikon Z mounts while the 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD is sold for Fujifilm X mounts too.

There’s no word right now on a similar firmware being available for the respective Nikon and Fuji versions of these lenses.

The Tamron 70-300 F4.5-6.3 Di RXD III is a relatively affordable lens aimed at Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras and retails for $499.99.

As for the Tamron 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD, it’s an APS-C format model that costs a bit more at $699.99 in its Sony version.
